Contributed to New Challenges for Data Design, a collection of essays edited by David Bihanic. “Changing Minds to Changing the World: Mapping the Spectrum of Intent in Data Visualization and Data Arts” is my attempt to map the interdisciplinary space of practitioners of visualization and related data arts. I was curious about how people from ostensibly different backgrounds — scientists, artists, architects, mathematicians, designers, statisticians, journalists — are able to communicate clearly and collegially. What do people who interpret data visually have in common, and how can that shape our understanding of this expanding community of practice?
The collection includes contributions by Giorgia Lupi, Wesley Grubbs, Alberto Cairo, Ali Almossawi, Santiago Ortiz, Dino Citraro, Kim Rees, Sha Hwang, Rachel Binx, Jonathan Harris, Nicholas Felton, Jan Willem Tulp, Moritz Stefaner, Stefanie Posavec, and Benjamin Wiederkehr.
